A major conservation project for the University of Greenwich involved remodelling the interiors of the former Royal Hospital Buildings at Greenwich as a new Campus incorporating 8,000m2 of teaching, office and recreational space.
The north-west vestibule of the Queen Anne Quarter of the buildings had been modified with the removal of stone pavings, modern decorative finishes and the insertion of service routes with the stone walling and vaulting. With the assistance of Heritage Lottery funding the space was restored, a stone floor re-instated and the walls conserved to their former appearance. The practice received a civic trust commendation for work on the Royal Hospital site.
The former seamens cabins in the Queen Mary building have been represented to provide small cellular office accommodation. The glazed screens have been conserved, and the joinery repaired. New panelled doors have been designed for the openings which had been removed during Naval occupation.
For English Heritage, projects include new Visitor Buildings at Battle Abbey and Carisbrooke Castle, and fabric repairs to the former Officers’ Barracks building at Dover Castle. At Chiswick Villa and Grounds, the practice is part of the team developing proposals for the conservation of the Burlington Landscape and its architectural features. An early phase of the project has seen the reinstatement of 2 cast lead sphinxes on the main entrance gates to the Villa and the conservation of the stone Obelisk.
