Higher Education

Work in Higher Education includes both large and small-scale new build and refurbishment projects and development planning and feasibility studies.

The Dreadnought Library and Learning Centre occupies what was formerly used for infirmary purposes for the Royal Hospital. The building was closed in 1986 when its use as an NHS hospital specialist unit ended and subsequently fell into an advanced state of decay and disrepair.

The University of Greenwich subsequently spent £10m regenerating, conserving and extending the building to provide approximately 1,000m2 of usable space for library and information resource.

The north and south halves of the central courtyard have been infilled with steel and glass constructions which include a ship’s deck-like structure of horizontal pierced beams supporting the main glass roofs.

The adjacent former Royal Hospital buildings have been converted to provide a variety of teaching, academic and social spaces. Integration of services has played a key part in this Grade 1 listed building complex demanding close collaboration with English Heritage throughout.
